    Your brakes are among the most significant safety devices in your car. Worn-out brakes can mean the main difference between a harsh stop and a serious accident. Swing by a local shop to get them inspect the wear on your pads if you haven’t had your brakes checked in the past year. For most cars, a visual inspection takes only a few minutes and can literally save your life.

    3. Inspect your belts

    As a car ages, the belts become dry and brittle, causing them to crack and, eventually, break. If your belt snaps on the streets, your car will cease working and you’ll lose plenty of time and money having it towed for the nearest shop. The time it will take to get a belt inspection can be a tiny fraction of the time it takes to get pulled home from the middle of nowhere.

    4. Top off coolant

    Your car’s cooling system is especially critical as soon as the weather gets hotter and you’re running the atmosphere conditioner to stay nice and frosty inside. If your car’s low coolant light comes on during the last few months, start the hood and check the coolant level. Most cars have a built in gauge that indicates the proper level. Only check your coolant level once the car is not driven recently, and make sure to top off with distilled water to avoid impurities.

    5. Refill window washer fluid reservoir

    During a long trip, your windshield will assuredly become covered in dust and dead bugs. To make sure you can easily and quickly remove these without having to stop at a gas station, ensure that your window washer fluid reservoir is full. You can purchase the fluid at your local auto parts store, and it’s usually relatively cheap. The window washer fluid reservoir on most cars is readily available under the hood, as it’s indicated by way of a picture of a windshield about the cap.

    Here’s a reminder of some of the greatest racing movies ever made.
    The Fast and The Furious
    Who’d have thought when Vin Diesel and Paul Walker starred in the first movie back in 2001 just how things would take off? These movies might not be nominated for the Oscars but they sure are entertaining. Paul Walker tragically died in a car accident while filming an amazing seventh in the series. This is surely one of the most successful movie franchises of all time.

    Cars
    Pixar brought the world of Nascar into the lives of ordinary children in 2006 when stock car Lightning McQueen raced onto the screens voiced by the ever popular Owen Wilson.
    Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby
    Will Ferrell, John C Reilly and none other than funny man Sacha Baron Cohen starred in this admittedly crazy movie at the race track. The movie had a typical Ferrell / Anchor Man flavor and was well received by any race car lovers who didn’t take themselves too seriously. It’s all about “”Shake ‘n Bake””.
    Days of Thunder
    A young Tom Cruise met a young Nicole Kidman on the set of this movie in 1990 which follows the ups and downs of a hot shot racer determined to follow his dreams to NASCAR. Just to add authenticity to the movie there were some cameo appearances by real NASCAR stars including Neil Bonnett, Rusty Wallace and Harry Gant.

    Two Lane Blacktop
    Perhaps not so well known to general movie goers, this 1971 drama became a cult classic with the unlikely pairing of James Taylor (yes, the singer) and Dennis Wilson (the same Dennis Wilson who is the drummer with the Beach Boys). The excitement builds as the guys drag race their way across the Southwest on Route 66.
    Cannonball Run
    This 1981 movie had wall to wall stars headed by Burt Reynolds with Dean Martin, Roger Moore, Sammy Davis Jr, Farrah Fawcett, Jackie Chan, Dom DeLuise, Peter Fonda, Jamie Farr, Jack Elam . . yes, the list is almost as long as the race. This movie was so successful that it was followed by two sequels, Cannonball Run II (that’s original) and Speed Zone.
    The Love Bug
    How can you have an article about movie race cars without including Herbie, the loveable Love Bug? Answer – you can’t. The first movie hit the screens in 1968 as the VW Beetle with a mind of his own carried driver Dean Jones to an unlikely victory. The rest, as they say, is history.

    Le Mans
    This movie was so lifelike that it was more of a documentary. Self confessed petrol head Steve McQueen superbly captured what life was like for a racer in the 24 hour Le Mans France car race.
    Grand Prix
    James Garner starred in this 1966 movie which focused on car racing and affairs of the heart . . . never a great combination. This is one car movie which actually did pick up a couple of Oscars for editing and sound.
    Rush
    One of the more recent racing movies to hit the screens tells the real life story of 1976 F1 World Champion James Hunt and his rivalry with Nikki Lauda. Not to be missed.

    The marque has set such a high benchmark over the years that its more modest offerings suffer by comparison, however.

    The best Jaguars ever made: E-Type

    Probably the most talked and written about Jag for all time. This sporty sensation took the motoring world by storm if it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961. With its sleek lines, stunning good looks, a top speed of 150mph, along with a price tag close to £2,000 it quickly attracted a massive following. The E-Type is without question an icon of the 1960s and although you can buy them second-hand you’ll need at the least £30,000.

    The best Jaguars ever made: XJS

    A simply beautiful car. It’s as much of a head-turner today because it was when first introduced back in the mid-1970s to replace the famed E-Type. Jaguar’s first foray in the international Grand Touring class was priced at a relatively modest £8,900 and went on being manufactured for a couple of decades. This stunning two-door machine experienced a 5.3-litre V12 engine that enabled it going to a top speed of 140mph.

    The introduction of the XJ6 in 1968 was a landmark moment for the company. At that time the product range was confusing, with various models and engine combinations available. However, the XJ6 – referring to its six cylinders, with a choice of 2.8- or 4.2-litre XK engines – arrived with a new look courtesy of designer Sir William Lyons. It had been also praised for its superior handling, as a result of a suspension system that provided a cushy ride for the passengers.

    The least-best Jaguars ever: XJ6 estate by Avon

    What a mess. When there started to be a demand for estates, coachbuilders Avon came up with this absolute monstrosity based on the beautiful XJ6. If a conservatory has been nailed onto the rear of the car, you can’t deny it was practical but there’s no escaping the fact it appears as. Looking back it’s surprising that Jaguar didn’t focus its firepower on taking on Mercedes in the estate market – at least it will have saved the world from such odious conversions.

    The least-best Jaguars ever: XJ350

    Okay this car wasn’t horrific. It was perfectly respectable looking and the fact its chassis and body was crafted from aluminium made it technically interesting. The problem was that the appearance of the XJ350, which was produced between 2003 and 2007, was just outdated by this stage. It looked too much like the XJs of the past, says Giles Chapman. It was a gentle evolution of those who had gone before and the world was just a little tired of that car. A face-lifted version – the Jaguar X358 – arrived in 2008.
